Laser metal deposition of refractory high entropy alloys using elementary powder blends

In contrast to traditional materials (like steels and aluminium alloys) high entropy alloys don´t have one base element, but consist of a homogeneous mixture of several elements, e.g. high-melting point refractory elements like titanium, niobium, molybdenum, tantalum and tungsten. Additive manufacturing enables the preparation of an alloy that, prior to this, had to be produced by sintering or in an electric arc furnace under argon atmosphere or in vacuum. The possibility to tune the chemical composition during the deposition process gives an important advantage for material analysis: Many compositions of a material gradient can be analyzed in one specimen.
